Child’s Play 2019 is for Viewers That Haven’t Seen Movies in the Original Franchise

I could not sit still while watching Child’s Play 2019. A part of me already knew I was wasting my time after the first 20 minutes.

The Child’s Play or Chucky we know had a bit of spirituality to the character and story: “a serial killer and voodoo practitioner named Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray is mortally wounded and transfers his soul via a voodoo ritual into a child-sized “Good Guys” doll. The doll is found by a homeless peddler and sold to Karen Barclay, who gives it to her son Andy as a birthday gift…” Well, we know the rest of the story.

Child’s Play 2019 took a modern approach to the origin story (because it was a reboot, obviously) but this approach might have backfired because original Chucky fans were displeased by this film. The story sucks and there were so many plotholes I won’t delve into for the sake of those who haven’t seen it.

In Child’s Play 2019, rather than a Good Guys doll taking on the soul of a dead serial killer, this Chucky is a piece of rogue AI (a “Buddi” doll with the ability to control all the technology in a house remotely via the cloud) who becomes self-aware and violent after a disgruntled sweatshop employee disables all of his safety features as an act of spite. Andy Barclay is now portrayed as a 13-year old boy living with his mother Karen in a new apartment building in Chicago, who, while less enthusiastic about the toy than in the original, finds use in him as a tool to scare his stepfather.

I wouldn’t want to continue for the sake of those that haven’t seen it.

What are viewers saying about Child’s Play 2019?

The one thing I noticed is that it’s really easy to enjoy the movie If you haven’t seen Chucky or the previous Child’s Play films before. These tweets are proof:

And here is someone as displeased as I am

And here is someone that probably hasn’t seen a single Child’s Play film in the past

Should you go see Child’s Play 2019? No, please. Spend that money and/or time on something else. It should have been called something else, in my opinion.
